“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”
 — Coco Chanel

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

This is a space for the curious, the healing, and the brave. For people who sense that there is more to their story than they’ve been able to articulate — and who are ready to look a little deeper.

My name is April Wright. I am a licensed psychotherapist in California and Florida, an expressive arts therapist, and an artist. I created Courageous Arts as a place where neuroscience meets human experience — where the latest research on how we love, attach, grieve, and grow is translated into language that actually means something to real people living real lives.

This blog is the companion to my clinical practice at The Courageous Self. Here, you don’t need to be in crisis to belong. You just need to be someone who believes that understanding yourself more deeply is one of the most worthwhile things you can do.

The Mission

Life is an ever-unfolding journey of relationship — with others, with ourselves, and with the world we inhabit. It is through our relationships that we learn our most important lessons: about love, about loss, about who we are when no one is watching.

My mission is simple and enduring: to educate, inspire, and empower people of all backgrounds to live with greater self-awareness, authenticity, and courage. To bring the science of the mind into the warmth of lived experience. And to remind you — again and again — that healing is not only possible. It is your birthright.

I believe that the journey inward is the most important journey we will ever take. And I believe it is best taken with honesty, compassion, curiosity — and a little courage.

It begins within, and transpires outward. Everything you are seeking is already inside you — waiting to be uncovered, understood, and set free.

What I Stand For

Every article, reflection, and resource on this blog is grounded in the values that guide my clinical work and my life:

🧠  Curiosity — I believe that understanding why we feel and behave as we do is one of the most liberating things a person can do. I bring the latest neuroscience and psychological research to you in language that is accessible, warm, and real.

❤️  Compassion — There is no judgment here. Whatever you are carrying — your patterns, your pain, your past — you are welcome here exactly as you are. Healing begins when we stop running from ourselves.

🌱  Growth — I believe deeply in the brain’s capacity to change, heal, and rewire. Neuroplasticity is not just a scientific concept — it is a profound source of hope. No matter where you are starting from, growth is always possible.

🎨  Creativity — As an expressive arts therapist and practicing artist, I know that healing does not only happen through words. It happens through movement, color, image, and story. I bring that sensibility to everything I write.

🌍  Inclusivity — This space is for people of all diversities — all backgrounds, identities, orientations, cultures, and life paths. I am committed to affirming, culturally sensitive care and content.

💡  Courage — Asking for help is courageous. Looking honestly at yourself is courageous. Choosing a different path than the one you were handed — that is courageous. This blog honors that courage in you.

What You Will Find Here

Courageous Arts covers the full landscape of human emotional life — through the lens of neuroscience, attachment theory, interpersonal biology, and the wisdom of lived experience. Here is a taste of what you will find:

The Neuroscience of Love: What Your Brain Is Doing When You Fall — and Stay — in Love

From dopamine rushes to oxytocin bonds, this deep dive explores the neurochemistry of attraction, attachment, and long-term love — including what the latest fMRI research and Interpersonal Neurobiology tell us about why some bonds endure.

When Everything Is in Boxes: The Neuroscience of Losing Your Things and Losing Yourself

Why does losing access to your belongings — during a move, a relocation, or a sudden disruption — feel like losing yourself? This article maps the neuroscience of object attachment, from childhood blankies to adult co-regulators, and explores how each attachment style experiences environmental loss differently.

Your Body, Your Choice, Your Timeline: The Neuroscience and Culture of Deciding Whether — and When — to Have Children

An honest, research-driven exploration of the childfree choice, late-in-life motherhood, and the science of autonomous decision-making — including the right to change your mind, the reality of modern reproductive medicine, and what the brain actually needs to thrive.

Coming Soon: The Neuroscience of Hoarding — When Attachment to Things Becomes Its Own Prison

Exploring the clinical spectrum from healthy object attachment to compulsive hoarding — the neurobiology, the attachment wounds, and the path toward healing.

Each article is written to be both scientifically grounded and deeply human — designed to help you understand yourself, your relationships, and your nervous system in ways that actually change how you live.

A Personal Note

I did not come to this work from the outside. My journey to becoming a therapist and artist was shaped as much by lived experience as by formal education — by my own seasons of loss, self-discovery, and transformation. I know what it feels like to reach a place of not knowing who you are, or how you got there, or where to begin.

I also know what it feels like to find your way through — to build an inner life that is yours, grounded in your own values and your own truth rather than in someone else’s expectations.

That is what this blog is for. And that is what therapy, at its best, makes possible.

Take your time here. Read what calls to you. Let it land. And when you are ready for something more — I am here.
